Senior Missionary P-Days

Join us on a P-Day adventure

P-Days for senior missionary couples is different than it is for Elder and Sister missionaries in our mission. Besides taking care of shopping and personal needs, we are allowed to travel throughout the mission. We let our director know where we plan to go and when we plan to be back. If we want to travel out of the mission boundary, like going to Palmyra, NY, we need to get permission from our director and mission president. We have to arrange our trip so we arrive back in time for any of our shift assignments. With our mission president’s approval, we are allowed to visit the temple (which is outside of our mission in Columbus, Ohio) during the months of General Conference. The senior missionaries will usually take sister missionaries with them because sister missionaries are not allowed to drive outside of the mission but are allowed to attend the temple twice each year in April and October if they can find a ride with members or senior missionaries.

On our first P-Day we decided to take a tour of the Kirtland temple. We toured the Kirtland temple’s visitor’s center and museum. We watched their movie and then toured the three floors of the temple. What a neat building the saints built over 180 years ago. (See my complete blog on the Kirtland temple). We were invited to sing “The Spirit of God” with the people on the tour and Kay played the piano. This was a choice experience remembering that this song was sung at the temple dedication in 1836.

We visited the cemetery (next to the temple) to see all the familiar names of early saints buried there. We also saw Joseph and Emma’s home (next to the cemetery – see picture below), Sidney Rigdon’s house (across from the temple) and Hyram Smith’s house (down the street a block from the temple). Sister missionaries live in the Hyram Smith home where we were able to see the inside. (see pictures below). There is some debate is Hyrum actually lived there or just owned the land where this house was built.
